What Effects Does Texting Have On College Students?

Texting is all about keeping the contact and being updated with “what is new”.  One effect of texting much is that students create their own world when they are texting. When a student is talking to a friend face-to-face they can see, hear and feel the world around them. Compare thus to a text conversation in which they just see the words and have to create a world around these words. In that world, the students place themselves as the mid point and their texting conversation is circling around them. Everything and everyone are connecting to the student through the cell phone. The students think they need their cell-phones to keep everything circling. Therefore, when students think of the world they think of their own world with themselves in the middle. But that is not how the real world works. In the real world no one is in the middle because everyone is circling around each other. And if students texting a lot they don’t understand how the real world works because they think their world is the real world.

It can be hard to not mix up the worlds but texting can also be positive because it’s an easy way for college students to keep contact with their friends. They can “be” with several friends at the same time through the phone and the only thing they have to do is to sit on the sofa and move their thumbs. But can it be that easy to have a big contact net? No, it can’t. Of course they can keep contact with people, but students will never be close friends if they just text each other. One thing is that it can be hard to understand and express feelings through just texts messages. That can lead to a lot of misunderstanding.
For example, if a student texts to a friend that “I have so much homework this week, I’m going to quit school!”, the friend might think the student is serious about it. But the student is not going to quit school. It was just an ironic sentence and trying to be funny through the text messages. That misunderstanding can lead to the friend can getting really sad and telling everyone that the student is going to quit. The story can also be worse when people tell it to each other. On the other hand, if the student and the friend have met each other, the friend for sure can see that the student was ironic about it. That can be seen because of how the students use the voice and the body language when they speak.
When students are talking to each other, face to face, they can use their body language. Everyone uses their body language and when students spend a lot of time with people they can see when a person is angry, sad, happy, etc. just by how they move. That is impossible to read just through a text message. If a college student texts a lot it can be hard to see the difference between expressing feelings in text messages compared to expressing them in the real life. For example, the student can’t hug someone through a text messages when their friend is sad, the student can just write “hug.” That leads to the students not getting any real connection with people. They can’t see or feel a hug in a text message, they can just read it. Because of all this they will not work in social situation because they don’t know how people act and work in real situations. Also, if students just talk to people through text messages, they can take the time they want before they answer. Compared to real life, students have to answer immediately after they get a question or when they talk to someone. That can be really hard for a student who is used to talking through text messages.

College students can’t just sit home the whole school time and text, they have to meet people and their friends. But when college students text all the time they are with their friends, they are very rude.  For example, students who are texting during the time a friend talks to them can’t both listen and talk to their friend. And the friend will feel as if they are not the priority. The texting student will be perceived as an unsocial person. That leads to that students losing friends and having a hard time making new friends because they text all the time. It will also be hard for college students to hang out with their friends because they are used to just texting with them. Therefore, they can’t have a long conversation when they are used to just short sentences in text messages. Most people will not be friends just through their phones; they will do things together in real life.

Cell phones have become very popular among college students and the texting the phone offers affects college students; when students create their own world they will lose their connection with people and therefore lose friends. Every part affects another and goes in a bad circle. The communications have changed to a more impersonal way in the world. Therefore, if texting students and people want to keep their friends they should send them a personal letter, like people did before everything became technical.

Not so many years ago people could just use a letter or visit their friends to keep in contact. It could also take a couple of days to find out the latest news. Therefore, when cell phones came, people’s networks changed because they could have closer contact even if they lived hundreds of miles from each other. One group that really uses cell phones and their abilities nowadays is college students. They have a total different way to keep contact with their friends than college students had a couple of years ago. Cell phones have become very popular and every student has their own. The popularity of texting affects college students in three ways; they create their own world, they will not have any real connection with people and they will lose friends.

WOOOHOOO! :P
